Massive airway edema after azathioprine.

چکیده
AZATHIOPRINE is an antimetabolite widely used to suppress the immune system in recipients of organ transplants, as well as in patients with primary autoimmune disorders. Over the past 30 yr, it has proved to be an effective agent. However, multiple side effects have been reported, ranging in severity from fever and rash to cardiovascular collapse. We report an acute idiosyncratic reaction to azathioprine in a patient undergoing kidney transplantation, characterized by life-threatening upper airway edema and circulatory collapse, both of which were elicited again after rechallenge.

Massive facial edema and airway obstruction secondary to acute postoperative sialadenitis or "anesthesia mumps": a case report
INTRODUCTION A case of massive facial edema and airway obstruction secondary to an acute sialadenitis is described that occurred a few hours after a neurosurgical procedure performed in the prone position. Literature on this topic is reviewed. CASE PRESENTATION A 73-year-old Caucasian woman underwent a right parieto-occipital craniotomy to remove a meningioma. The procedure was performed in t...
متن کاملAcute Massive Laryngeal Edema in a Case of Decompressive Cervical Laminectomy Through Posterior Approach
The occurrence of airway obstruction following the posterior approach for cervical spine surgery is not widely recognised. This potentially disastrous complication should be anticipated and the anaesthetic management of airway should be planned accordingly. We present this case report of massive laryngeal oedema following an elective cervical spine decompression surgery via the posterior approa...
متن کاملLaryngospasm-induced pulmonary edema.
We report the case of a 6-month-old child who developed acute pulmonary edema because of laryngeal spasm during orthopedic manipulations for congenital hip dysplasia. Laryngospasm was probably secondary to an unsuspected light level of anesthesia, maintained via face mask. No other predisposing factors, such as enlarged adenoid tonsils, laryngitis, epiglottitis, mechanical stimulation of the la...
متن کاملAcute and perioperative care of the burn-injured patient.
Care of burn-injured patients requires knowledge of the pathophysiologic changes affecting virtually all organs from the onset of injury until wounds are healed. Massive airway and/or lung edema can occur rapidly and unpredictably after burn and/or inhalation injury. Hemodynamics in the early phase of severe burn injury is characterized by a reduction in cardiac output and increased systemic an...
متن کاملRetropharyngeal haematoma – an unusual bleeding site in an anticoagulated patient: a case report
INTRODUCTION Anticoagulation is used widely for the primary prevention of embolic events in patients with atrial fibrillation. Bleeding is the most common complication with oral anticoagulation. We describe the case of a patient who developed a massive retropharyngeal haematoma after a fall. Whilst the retropharyngeal space is an uncommon site for bleeding complications, it is clinically import...
